The Zenon P Hospital is a container-based modular healthcare facility concept designed for deployment in Africa. The project was commissioned by Zenon Nowacki, president of the Kujawian-Pomeranian regional chamber of the Order of Architects of Poland. The brief called for a healthcare architecture system capable of rapid deployment in remote or under-resourced regions, scalable from a minimal first-phase clinic to a full hospital campus. Two concept variations were developed: a campus village layout and a compact single-building clinic, both derived from the same container-based modular unit. The concept was delivered as visualization material in September 2023.

Campus Village — Concept 1

The first concept organizes container-derived modules into a campus village: multiple parallel bars arranged around central courtyards with covered walkways connecting clinical, ward, and service zones. The layout generates shaded outdoor spaces between buildings that manage solar gain in the target high-sun climate while providing gathering areas for patients and staff. Deep roof canopies extend beyond the container module walls, creating shaded promenades that function as the primary circulation system.

The campus plan allows the facility to grow incrementally. Initial deployment covers essential clinical functions in a compact cluster. As demand increases, additional container modules extend the parallel bars or stack vertically into two-storey configurations with external staircase access and balcony circulation galleries. This additive logic means the facility is never unfinished at any stage of construction.

Interior ward spaces demonstrate that the container module dimensions accommodate functional clinical layouts. Treatment bays with hospital beds, medical equipment rails, overhead lighting, and natural daylight from standardized window openings confirm the module as a tested clinical environment rather than an abstract concept. White surfaces and controlled openings maintain hygiene standards within the modular construction constraints.

The campus concept addresses climate response through passive architectural means: deep overhanging canopies block direct sun from reaching the container walls, covered walkways eliminate the need for exposed outdoor movement between buildings, and cross-ventilation through the standardized window openings reduces dependence on mechanical cooling. Planted areas between the container blocks introduce native vegetation that provides additional shade and defines zones of rest.

At night the campus reads as a constellation of illuminated volumes, interior light spilling through window openings against the dark landscape. The floating canopy silhouettes distinguish the healthcare facility from the raw container forms that might otherwise be assumed, communicating an architectural intent that signals the importance of the institution to the surrounding community.

Compact Clinic — Concept Advanced

The second concept condenses the modular system into a single compact building: a linear bar form beneath a pronounced floating roof canopy. Where the campus village distributes programme across multiple structures, the compact clinic consolidates all functions under one roof for sites where a smaller first-phase facility is needed. The same container-derived module and construction logic applies, but the architectural expression is unified into a single identifiable form.

The deep roof overhang creates a covered zone between the clinical interior and the open landscape, providing shade and rain protection without requiring enclosed corridor space. A defined forecourt approach under the canopy establishes a clear arrival threshold that humanizes the institutional function. The bar form allows straightforward future extension by adding modules to either end of the linear plan.
